With Arte ≠ Vida: Actions by Artists of the Americas, 1960-2000 as a point of departure, El Museo is publishing a lavishly illustrated, bilingual resource book to accompany this groundbreaking exhibition. The publication provides a chronological overview, and a selection of essays by experts on the field addressing each of ten regions in depth. Gabriela Rangel, Director of Visual Arts and Curator, The Americas Society; Robert Neustad,Professor, Northen Arizona University; Claudia Calirman, author of Brazilian Art Under the Dictatorship (forthcoming, Duke University Press); Elvis Fuentes, Curator, El Museo del Barrio; and other invited scholars join Deborah Cullen, Director of Curatorial Programs, El Museo del Barrio, on a panel that will explore the many themes of the exhibition as presented in the catalogue. Join us for two special programs celebrating renowned Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa. A socially-committed playwright, essayist, and a novelist, Vargas Llosa has brought contemporary Latin American literature to the international forefront. — La Fiesta del Chivo,
Dir. Luis Llosa, starring Isabella Rossellini (2006 / Peru / 105 min / Fiction / Spanish with English subtitles). Based on the best-selling novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, La Fiesta del Chivo is the story of Urania Cabral (Isabella Rossellini) an independent Manhattan lawyer, she returns to the Dominican Republic after thirty years to face her past the memory of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo (Tomás Milian) a.k.a “El Chivo” (The Goat), the dictator who ruled the island paradise with an iron-fist. Isabella Rossellini will be present to introduce the film. Admission: Free.

In Our Lingo: Dialogues Between Latino Authors

Join us for two special programs celebrating renowned Peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa. A socially-committed playwright, essayist, and a novelist, Vargas Llosa has brought contemporary Latin American literature to the international forefront.

In Our Lingo brings together authors in conversation with filmmakers and artists to share their views on themes and social issues addressed in Latino literature. This program will discuss the impact of Mario Vargas Llosa’s La Fiesta del Chivo (Alfaguara, 2000) and its film adaptation by Luis Llosa. La Fiesta del Chivo received critical acclaim around the globe and raised awareness about the legacy of the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. Joining Mario Vargas Llosa will be Luis Llosa, director of the film by the same name and Isabella Rossellini, celebrated actor and filmmaker. The dialogue will be moderated by Carmen Boullosa, a playwright, critic and novelist.

Acentos is a program of the louderARTS Project, Inc., presented in conjunction with the Bronx Writers' Center, a program of the Bronx Council on the Arts. Acentos provides a renewed spotlight for Latino poetry in a venue that fosters an encouraging atmosphere for writers of diverse backgrounds and experience, in a setting that stimulates both open dialogue and an increased sense of community in the culturally resurgent South Bronx. Acentos is presented every second and fourth Tuesday of the month by Oscar Bermeo, Jessica Torres, Fish Vargas and Rich Villar.
